Comparison of Selected Impacts of New Frontier and Great Society Programs in 1960s
Kojan, Christian ; Johnson, Zdenka (advisor) ; Fabianková, Klára (referee)
This thesis deals with New Frontier and Great Society programs and their impact on social policy of the United States in the 1960s. The main goal of the thesis is to compare impact of both programs on selected indicators of standard of living with primary focus on the poverty rate. Thesis describes antipoverty measures of both programs and analyzes their impact on the standard of living. Hypothesis stating that the Great Society was more successful than New Frontier at reducing the poverty rate could not be proven true because of the immense influence of strong economic growth in the 1960s. Thesis suggests that the biggest success of both programs was the positive impact of the Great Society on education.
Stimulation of demand versus stimulation of supply: tax reforms in the US in the second half of the twentieth century
Jirásek, Vojtěch ; Strejček, Ivo (advisor) ; Zeman, Martin (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to compare the Reagan tax reforms in the US in the 80s with the Kennedy-Johnson tax policy from the 60s. Tax policy is a key tool to influence the economic situation in a country. The topic of tax reform is particularly timely in connection with the United States presidential elections. The thesis responds to criticism of Hillary Clinton and of economic policy of R. W. Reagan. Stimulation of demand in the 1960s and stimulation of supply in the 80s (both stimuli conducted mainly through the reduction of tax rates) provide similar results. In the period after the reforms GDP grows and unemployment decreases. On the contrary, we can see a reduction in the amount of collected funds in the period shortly after the reforms that in the long term returns to its original value and continues to grow. The thesis therefore brings important recognition of the positive impact of tax cuts on macroeconomic aggregates and of the long term increase of tax revenue to the state budget.
Was the Great Society great? Social policy of President L. B. Johnson and its impacts on the society
Zdarsová, Dominika ; Johnson, Zdenka (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with social policy of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his Great Society. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze what impacts the programme has on the society with focus on racial minorities (especially afro-Americans). It devotes primarily to labour market, employment and War on Poverty. Under the patronage of Great Society many of legislative acts and progammes were realized in sphere of education, job training or health care, which should help to disadvantaged groups of population. During the Johnson's era in years 1964 -- 1968 unemployment really decreased and poverty as well, even on black population. However, it is not evident if it was consequence of Great Society or of economical growth which took place these years in United States.
War on poverty and/or Vietnam war? Question of USA budget priority in second half of 1960´s
Černík, Jaroslav ; Johnson, Zdenka (advisor) ; Tajovský, Ladislav (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with influence of the Vietnam War on the economy and the federal budgets of the USA with an emphasis on possible effects of this conflict on the continuing War on Poverty declared by the President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The thesis examines changes in expenditures of the federal budget. Their development in the period 1964 -- 1969 indicates that the Vietnam conflict was not a major influence on the failure of Johnson's social programs fighting poverty. The thesis implies that one possible explanation of the failure might be found in Johnson's choice of both ineffective way of dealing with the phenomenon of poverty and in a way of acquiring funds for his social programs, which led to increasing distrust of him and his social policy.
